Sports  physiology & psychology

Paul Gouda
"Chemist turned football theoritician" was the headline of the "Peninsula news" newspaper shown below.
I have utilized my chemistry, biology and physiology training to design sofisticated training drills and programmes for referees. The courses were designed to deal with such areas as aerobic and anaerobic training, long term programme and preparation within the three days prior to the big match, diet to enhance endurance and diet to enhance mental concentration .. and more of specialized, unique and  first-of-its-kind material that has been proven very effective.
As well, my academic background in psychology was utilized to produce a new programme for referees' mental training.
It dealt with man-management and game control, a topic many under-estimate its depth and effectiveness. It is an area many instructors struggle to address, most of whome have no training in psychology and they get away with a presentation consisting of the same simple and very basic - almost insulting - material under the cloud of an image of success as a top class referee.

Clearly being a top referee alone is not sufficient for one to master and present such a topic as psychology of officiating.  Such referee could only "try" based on his own trial and error experience and limited to his own cases and to his interpretation and understanding of these cases. Hence, the average coverage of this topic from what I have seen is only an hour or so full of hollow simple material which referees heard over and over.  This is why I felt this area needed to be visited.
I have been invited by several football confederations and National associations, and I was paid generously to address senior - including  FIFA referees on the topic of psychology of officiating.  This included lecturing in Europe in Romania, Bulgaria and Greece; in Asia in Japan, Qatar, and Lebanon ..
The course I authored consisted of 5 classroom sessions of 2 hours each and 3 practicall drills sessions on the field of 1.5 hours each, a total of 14.5 hours. Cick on the link to the left to view the psychology of officiating clinic agenda.

Having been appointed by Asia Confedeeration president & FIFA vice president H.E. M. Ben Hamam
to the full time post of tecgnical director of an Asian Football Association's referee referee development programme, and having had the resources and time for over three years under that contract as a professional footballer, I had time to produce such material and to utilize professional full time sports physiologists and therapists and excellent facilities and equipments to test and to monitor the effectiveness of the psychology and the physiology of soccer courses I introduced.

Selected newspapers clippings showing media coverage of my  national level activities - in the international arena.

Two very large memorabilia binders I keep present a clear picture of the intensity of football research & development I led professionally overseas.

As I stated on page "author",
I have published many books on referee development including the manuals of the programme developed during 3+ years contract as a professional full time referee development director at the National level.
